The Altar at Mookini, 2004; North
Kohala, Hawaii Island. Mookini Luakini is one of the oldest and
most sacred temples in Hawaii, it was also the sight of thousands
of human sacrifices. Today, the ancient heiau complex is used to
teach school children about Hawaiian culture. Located near the Birthsite
of Kamehameha the Great, Mookini welcomes ordinary tourists only
on special occasions-and then only if visitors bring a flower lei
to lay upon the altar.
